Racine Spartans [Fall 2006] Girls U-18 - Team Event

FC Milwaukee Invitational - 2006 [Uihlein Soccer Park, Milwaukee Wisconsin]

The Racine Spartans Girls U-18 White [Fall 2006] competed in FC Milwaukee's summer invitational held on August 18-20 2006 at Uihlein Soccer Park [Milwaukee Wisconsin]. Competing in the Classic Flight, Racine played Hinsdale [IL] Soccer Club, Stevens Point [WI] and Middleton Yahara Soccer Club [MYSC] White in round robin competition and were awarded first place honors by winning two of their games.

The summer invitational attracts a fair number of college coaches, some of whom stopped by to watch Racine take on MYSC and talk with head coach Issy Martinez and senior players.

Join in the game action by viewing the 'Girls GOT it Going' video which is approximately two minutes long and requires a broadband (cable, DSL) connection.

Game #1:   Racine Spartans: 1     Hinsdale [IL] Soccer Club U-18 Green: 3
The Spartans were without many of their starters for the opening game against Hinsdale Soccer Club U-18 Green and struggled to maintain control. After Hinsdale scored first the Spartans answered with their own late in the first half. However, Hinsdale combined for two more goals early in the second half and the Spartans couldn't muster much of an attack. It was an inauspicious start; but tomorrow would bring two more chances to get back on track.

Game #2:   Racine Spartans: 4     Stevens Point [WI]: 2
Stevens Point struck first but the Spartans kept battling back, answering each score with a goal of their own. With the score tied 2-2 at half time, the Spartans took the lead (for the first time in this tournament) early in the second half and went on to add an insurance goal on their way to wearing down a competitive Stevens Point team. Scoring was spread among Melissa Christiansen, Jenna Schonert, Caroline Crehan and Abby Husch.

Game #3:   Racine Spartans: 2     Middleton-Yahara White [WI]: 0
The Spartans struggled during the first half of play as Middleton-Yahara successfully worked an aggressive flat-back defense that consistently caught the Spartans in offside trap situations. The second half of play started with the score tied 0-0 and the Spartans were still trying to adjust when Abby Husch headed a Jenna Schonert corner kick low into the goal for the first score of the game. Abby ended the scoring later in the second half with a volley back into the goal following a deflection.

The final outcome of bracket play (there was no championship match) was decided a couple of hours after Racine's final game in a contest between Stevens Point and Hinsdale. With that game ending in a scoreless tie, the Spartans took home the championship with two wins and one loss.
